Weight Loss Wednesday – Part 5

Well I’ve been off the work out wagon this week because I’ve come down with a sinus infection and I feel like rubbish. I never thought I’d say this but I have actually kinda missed exercising. I did get out for a walk yesterday to hopefully feel better but I think its gonna be a few more days before I feel well enough to get back to the gym. I’ve been faithful to the 1500 calorie diet though and I wanted to talk a little bit today about how I keep to it.

Now the number 1500 is not for everyone. You need to do some research to find out what amount of daily calories is going to be a healthy amount for you. The more you weigh, the more calories you need even if you’re trying to lose weight. Ultimately you need to be burning about 500 more calories per day than you consume. So if you’re exercising a lot you will need more calories to keep you energized. You also need to consider that everyone burns a certain amount of calories per day during normal activity. If you have a job sitting at a desk you will burn less than someone who, for example, does landscaping. Using an app like Calorie Counter will help you account for all of this.

My daily diet usually looks a little something like this:

Breakfast:  Smoothie = 590 calories

This is really filling! And the calories are total calories, not fat calories. This smoothie is really high in nutrients, vitamins, and extremely low in fat.

2 bananas (200 calories)

1 pot of yogurt (100 calories)

2 cups of spinach (30 calories)

6 oz carrot juice (60 calories)

Protein Powder 2 scoops (200 calories)

1 cup of ice

Lunch: Campbell’s Soup = 100 calories

Lately I’m really into the Harvest Orange Tomato. Its sooo good! Plus, eating hot soup actually burns calories as your body works to cool it to a digestible temperature.

Snack: 20 pretzels = 100 calories

There are lots of great 100 calories snacks like Rice Cakes, granola bars, wheat thins, almonds. Crunchy snacks are great for holding you over until dinner.

Dinner: Grilled Chicken with Vegetables = 650 calories

6 oz grilled chicken (280 calories)

1/2 Tbsp olive oil (60 calories)

Sauteed Veggies (160 calories)

Beer (150 calories) You can still drink on the diet, just skip sugary drinks like margaritas and go for a light beer instead.

Weight Loss Wednesday & Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day 2012

Well as you probably could have guessed I did not do so well on my diet this weekend. Between, beignets and booze I was way off course in New Orleans when it came to keeping the weight off and unfortunately it showed on the scale yesterday when I found that I had gained 2 pounds. I’m not upset though. By Monday I was right back on track with my diet and yesterday I burned 1,500 more calories than I ate! Woohoo!

Last night my nephews came over to hang out, so instead of going to the gym we all went outside and did calisthenics. I did 160 jumping jacks, 30 pushups, 60 cherry pickers (crunches), and 80 squats. I burned about 200 calories in less than 20 minutes. It was an awesome workout and I feel really sore today. It wasn’t all that hard actually, but I’m definitely feel the results.

Today for lunch I went to Chick-fil-A for appreciate day 2012. There was a line out the door! I was glad to see so many people show up to support an amazing company. Though this blog is about homemaking and not politics, I do think that whether you agree with the owners of Chick-fil-A or not, we need to stand up for free speech in this country. If you have a position, you have a right to share that position without being attacked. I never knew eating a sandwich could become a political statement, but boy was it tasty! Polynesian sauce never tasted so patriotic. And they have the best iced tea I’ve ever tasted in my life… even better than my momma’s (sorry mom). Anyway, back onto the whole weight loss thing- Did you know that if you get the wheat bun with no butter instead of the regular bun you can have a chicken sandwich with 100 fewer calories? Sweet! Also if you get the chicken soup instead of waffle fries it is only 140 calories.

One of my new favourite meals is a mean grean protein smoothie.

  • 2 bananas

1 pot of vanilla yogurt

1 cup of ice

2 scoops of chocolate protein powder

1 empty yogurt pot filled with liquid of your choice (milk, OJ, carrot juice)

2 handfuls of fresh spinach.

Blend. Mmm. It is soo yummy! The spinach just disappears and you can’t even taste it at all, it just tastes like yummy banana goodness, and it really fills me up!

One comment = 5 jumping jacks.

Weight Loss Wednesday – Part 3

Well after last wednesday I was more than frustrated with the whole exercise thing, but I tried to stay steady on the diet. I also decided that tan fat is better than pale fat so I signed up for a one month membership for tanning. I don’t normally go tanning, but I’m awfully pale and I figured it might make me feel better. It worked 🙂

I’ve been enjoying Campbell’s soup which is only 80-100 calories a can, and awesome dishes like this one: 3 cups of collard greens and one strip of bacon. Tons of fiber, vitamin A, C,  K, folic acid and phytonutrients. The best part is that a big ol’ mess of greens is only about 70 calories! The down side is that it gives you terrible gas, don’t ask how I figured that one out.

Good news came Thursday when I weighed myself at publix and realized that the scale at my gym is way off! I had actually lost 4 lbs!

So my silent-treatment with the gym was finally over. I actually made it to the gym on Thursday and managed to do 10 calories a minute on the eliptical! I was really proud of that! I rewarded myself by buying lots of really cute work out shorts to match my new Nike’s.

Adam’s parent’s were in town over the weekend and I splurged a little on meals like this from Bon Appetit in Dunedin. Crusted Red Snapper over lobster hash swimming in a bath of beurre blanc. Oooooooh…. ahhhhh. Dishes like this one could be the end of me. It was amazingly tasty. I went over my calories by almost 600 eep! But it was so worth it.

Saturday we spent the day at Islands of Adventure (its a theme park) and walked off about 500 calories! It was about a million degrees outside and I was sweating like crazy. I googled whether or not walking in the heat burned more calories than inside on a treadmill and apparently it doesn’t. The sweat that comes out when you’re hot is just water, its not actual weight loss. Too bad, cause I would be super skinny living in FL.

I’ve upped my eliptical time to 20 minutes a day now, and I’m burning 200 calories instead of 150! Can you believe it? I can’t!

Today when I weighed myself I’m down another 2 lbs! That’s a total loss of 6 lbs in 2 weeks. I’m just pleased as punch and I have new motivation to see this thing through.

1 comment = 3 situps. Ooooh look at me upping the Ante!

Weight Loss Wednesday – Part 2

I’m really taking this weight loss thing seriously. So I got this amazing app called Calorie Counter. Adam and I have been religiously recording our daily calorie intake and I have to say I had no idea how much I was eating! I thought I was a relatively healthy person but I was really overdoing it I think.

I like this calorie limit because even though I’m eating probably about half of what I was used to, I feel perfectly full by the end of the day and I feel like a million bucks! The nice thing is that if I go over on my calories, I can exercise more and the app will account for it. I have so much more control than I thought.

I’ve been eating far less bread and cheese, much to my chagrin, but I’m hoping that once I get to my goal weight I can slowly add it back in if I keep exercising.

All in all I’ve felt so great about all this weight loss business.

Even the exercise hasn’t been that bad. I thought I would hate it, but I’ve really come to enjoy it… until last night.

I weighed myself and it appears I’ve gained a pound. I sat pouting in the gym while Adam lifted weights, and today I’m angry at exercise.

Adam says it is because I’m building muscle, but I doubt I’ve built a whole pound of muscle in a week. Ugh, this is frustrating. I’m really impatient and I was hoping to at least see some results, even a little. Someone tell me this will work!

On the bright side, for being such a good girl, Adam brought me a lovely surprise. One of the wonderful things about my sweet husband is that he buys me clothes and shoes and brings them home to me. He even gets the right size! 🙂

He came home with a Nordstrom bag, and in that bag was a box, and in that box was a brand new pair of Nike Sneakers! I hope this keeps me hanging on. We’ll see.

Weight Loss Wednesday

So I love food. I mean I REALLY LOVE FOOD. I love cooking for Adam and I love eating, at home, at restaurants, under bridges, in a box, in a shoe, at a zoo, I love food.

Unfortunately for my waistline, and my rapidly closing twenties, I do not like exercising, and the same old thing just isn’t working the same old way. When I was 19 I could eat whatever I wanted and never gain a pound, but alas my youth is behind me.

I am now going to publically confess that since I got married in December 2010 I’ve gained 20 pounds. Gasp! I weigh more than I ever have in my life. This has got to end. So I’m going to lose it. Not all of it. But 16 pounds. I was a bit skinny when we got married anyway so I’m giving myself a break. In fact we were both skinny as you can see here in our wedding pictures. Adam is in on this whole weight loss thing too.

So here’s the plan.

I’m going to exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

I’m dropping my calories to 1500 per day.

And I need to burn 500+ more calories a day than I eat.

I can do this! I’ll keep you posted, and I hope you’ll root me on!

For every comment on this post today I’ll do 2 sit-ups. Let’s get in shape! 🙂
